DIY Drywall Repair: How to Fix Holes, Cracks, and Other Damage

Drywall damage

Drywall is everywhere in your house. It’s inevitable that it will become damaged over time. Whether it’s a small hole from a nail or a larger crack from settling, repairing drywall is an important, money-saving task to keep your walls looking smooth and flawless. Here’s how to do it:

Before starting, make sure you have all the tools and materials you need.

To repair small holes: For small holes, apply a small amount of spackling paste or joint compound to the hole using a putty knife. Smooth the paste out until it’s even with the surface of the wall. Allow the paste to dry completely, then sand the area until it’s smooth. If the repair is noticeable, you may need to apply a coat of paint to match the surrounding area.

To repair larger holes: For holes larger than about the size of a quarter, you’ll need to cut a patch from a piece of drywall. Measure and cut the patch to fit the hole, then attach it to the wall using drywall screws. Once the patch is secure, apply spackling paste or joint compound to the seams and smooth it out with a putty knife. Allow the paste to dry completely, then sand the area until it’s smooth. Again, if the repair is noticeable, you may need to apply a coat of paint to match the surrounding area.

Repair cracks: For cracks in your drywall, apply spackling paste or joint compound to the crack using a putty knife. Smooth the paste out until it’s even with the surface of the wall. Allow the paste to dry completely, then sand the area until it’s smooth. If the crack is deep or wide, you may need to apply multiple layers of paste to fully fill it in. As with smaller repairs, you may need to apply a coat of paint to match the surrounding area if the repair is noticeable.

Repairing drywall may seem intimidating, but with the right tools and some patience, it’s a task that anyone can tackle. Don’t let small damages ruin the appearance of your walls – with a little bit of elbow grease, you can have them looking like new again in no time.
